September 27th, 2024 is a huge day in the William Tennent football program. Wissahickon coming off a 4-game stretch of 204 total points averaging 51.25 points a game, Wissahickon would've been the favored coming in.
After each team's first drive, this game looked like it would've been decided by the halfway point of the quarter.
The first half flew through with each team in a stalemate at 7. Tennent started the game with the ball and went three and out early leading to an early punt. Once Wiss found their way with the ball they rushed down the field getting on the board early and quickly. Nolan Pounds dropped the shoulder on a rollout play five yards from the end zone, he powered his way and got Wissahickon the 7-0 lead with 5:57 in the first. Tennent muffed the kickoff leading them to start off at their own 2-yard line. Their second drive was no better than the first as they went four and out for a second time in the game.
As Wissahickon started to drive down the field and get into scoring range, Tennent had a sign of life stripping the ball away and recovering at their 35 with a minute and ten seconds left in the first. Going on their third drive Tennent ran old-school, ground-and-pound, time-consuming football. From a minute and ten seconds left in the first till four minutes and forty seconds in the half, Tennent kept their drive alive leading all the way to a score. Derrick Guenther - who was in for Gavin Mensch due to injury - took the snap and drove his way into the end zone from five yards out. Both teams went into the half tied at 7.
While Wiss was supposed to start the half with the ball, Tennent’s special teams had other plans. An onside kick gave Tennent the ball back to start the second half. They then went straight down the field and scored to open up the second half. Guenther again found his way into the end zone this time from two yards to push Tennent’s lead up to 14-7 with eight minutes and thirty-two seconds in the third. Before Wiss had a chance to get anything started in the second half, a fumble yet again costed them their drive. Tennent took over at the Wiss forty-three-yard line with eight minutes and twenty-six seconds in the third.
The third and final score from Tennent came at the hands of Joey Hebling. Another long rushing drive capped off by a short four-yard rushing touchdown separated Tennent from Wissahickon even further and gave them the 21-7 lead with three minutes and nine seconds remaining in the third. By the end of the third Wissahickon had a short life as they got to the ten-yard line, but two false starts and a no gain, a first and goal from the ten soon became a third and twenty from the twenty.
The fourth quarter took time, gave, and took life. Wissahickon's hopeful drive ended off an incomplete pass in the back corner of the end zone giving Tennent the ball at their fifteen up two scores. After yet another long Tennent drive, Wissahickon finally made a late-game strike to put themselves back in the game. Sophomore Quasir Sampson took a 2-yard hand off up the middle on fourth and goal with four minutes and forty-one seconds remaining to bring Wiss back within one score down 21-14.
Unfortunately, Wissahickon would never see the ball again. Tennet ran the ball down the throats and hopes of Wissahickon driving out the game and getting the 21-14 upset win.
